GEO: How AI Overviews Are Changing Local Search

What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing content so generative AI systems — Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity — summarize and recommend your business accurately when someone asks a question your business could answer. For local and small businesses, this increasingly means being the business an AI assistant recommends when someone asks "best [service] near me" or "who should I hire for [need]" — not just ranking in a traditional map pack.

Why This Matters for Local Businesses Specifically

Local search behavior is shifting fast. Instead of searching "plumber near me" and scanning a list of results, more people are asking an AI assistant directly and acting on whatever one or two businesses it names. If your business isn't structured in a way the AI can confidently cite, you don't just rank lower — you may not get mentioned at all.

This is a bigger risk for local businesses than it is for large brands, because local businesses tend to have thinner, less structured web presences to begin with — making it harder for an AI system to confidently recommend them over a competitor with cleaner data.

How Local Businesses Can Optimize for GEO

1. Keep your business information identical everywhere. Your business name, address, phone number, and hours should match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile, and directory listings.

2. Add structured data (schema markup). LocalBusiness schema, service schema, and review schema give machines readable facts to pull from. Google documents the required and recommended LocalBusiness properties in its Search Central guide (linked below).

3. Answer specific questions on your website, in your own words. Pages that directly answer "How much does [service] cost in [area]?" are far more citable than generic service pages.

4. Collect and display real reviews with specific detail. Reviews that mention specific outcomes are more useful to AI systems than generic 5-star ratings alone.

5. Keep your Google Business Profile active and detailed. Regularly updated profiles, with services listed explicitly and questions answered in the Q&A section, feed directly into how AI systems describe local businesses.

GEO vs Traditional Local SEO

Traditional local SEO optimizes primarily for map pack ranking and organic position. GEO optimizes for being accurately described and recommended by an AI system, which depends more on structured, consistent, specific information than on backlinks or citation volume alone. The two aren't in conflict — a business with strong local SEO fundamentals already has much of what GEO needs. GEO simply raises the bar on consistency and specificity.

Google itself says no special optimization is needed to appear in AI Overviews beyond solid Search fundamentals, so the practical work is accuracy and clarity. Our digital marketing team can help, and you can read the companion guide on Answer Engine Optimization.
