What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring your website's content so AI tools — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, voice assistants — can read it, understand it, and cite it directly in their answers. Where traditional SEO optimizes for a ranked list of blue links, AEO optimizes for being the source an AI assistant quotes when someone asks it a question.

This shift matters because more people are skipping the search results page entirely. They're asking an AI assistant a question and acting on whatever answer comes back — without ever clicking through to a website. If your content isn't structured for that, you're invisible in a growing share of searches, even if you rank well in traditional Google results.

How Is AEO Different From SEO?

SEO and AEO overlap but aren't the same discipline:

  • SEO optimizes for ranking position in a search engine results page — keywords, backlinks, page speed, and so on.
  • AEO optimizes for being extracted and quoted by an AI system — which depends more on how clearly your content answers a specific question, not how many backlinks point to it.

A page can rank #1 in Google and still never get cited by an AI assistant, because the content isn't written in a way that's easy for a language model to lift a direct answer from. Conversely, a well-structured answer on page two of Google can still get quoted if it directly and clearly answers the question being asked.

Google's own guidance is a useful reality check: it says the same fundamentals that apply to Search also apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and that no special markup or AI-specific files are required to appear in them. In practice, AEO is mostly about doing the fundamentals very clearly.

How to Optimize Your Website for AEO

1. Answer the question in the first 1–2 sentences. AI systems favor content that states the answer plainly near the top, rather than building up to it with a long introduction.

2. Use question-phrased headings. A heading like "How much does a website redesign cost?" is easier for an AI system to match to a user's question than a vague heading like "Pricing Considerations."

3. Add FAQ sections with clear question-and-answer structure. Marking them up with FAQPage structured data is still valid and can help machines parse them, but note that Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search in 2026, so treat the markup as a clarity aid rather than a ranking lever.

4. Be specific and factual. Numbers, dates, and named specifics get cited more often than vague claims. "Most website redesigns cost between $5,000 and $75,000" is more citable than "redesigns can vary widely in cost."

5. Keep your entity information consistent. Your business name, address, and description should match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile, and any directories — inconsistency makes AI systems less confident citing you as a source.

Does AEO Replace SEO?

No — they work together. Good SEO fundamentals (fast load times, clean structure, authoritative content) make AEO easier, and good AEO content tends to perform well in traditional search too, since both reward content that clearly and directly answers a real question.
