How to Choose a Web Design Agency in the UK: 9 Questions to Ask

How Do You Choose a Web Design Agency?

To choose a web design agency, start with what your website needs to achieve, then compare agencies on relevant work, a clear process, transparent pricing, built-in SEO and what support you get after launch. The best fit is rarely the cheapest or the largest. It is the team that understands your goal and can show you how they will meet it.

Below are nine questions that will help you tell a strong agency from a weak one, followed by the red flags to avoid. If you are still deciding what to build, our website development service page shows how we approach it.

1. Have You Built Something Similar to What I Need?

Look for relevant experience, not just attractive screenshots. An agency that has built a booking site, an online shop or a service business website will already know the common problems. Ask to see live sites, not only mock-ups, and check how they look and load on a phone.

2. Who Will Actually Work on My Project?

Ask who your day-to-day contact is, who designs, who develops and whether any work is passed to outside contractors. A clear answer shows a stable process. A vague one can mean slow replies later.

3. How Do You Handle SEO and Page Speed?

A good website that nobody finds is a missed opportunity, so SEO should be part of the build, not an afterthought. Ask how they plan page structure, headings, metadata, redirects and mobile performance. Google publishes clear targets for loading speed and responsiveness, known as Core Web Vitals, and a good agency should be able to tell you how they build to meet them.

If search visibility matters to you, look for an agency that offers web design and SEO together. You can see how we combine them through our SEO service.

4. Which Platform Will You Build On, and Why?

The platform affects cost, speed and how easily you can edit your own site. A good agency will recommend one for your needs and explain the trade-offs rather than defaulting to what they always use. We build on several, and our guide to Webflow vs WordPress explains how to choose. You can also read about our Webflow development work.

5. What Exactly Is Included in the Price?

Ask for a written scope that lists the number of pages, rounds of revisions, copywriting, images, integrations and training. Costs are easiest to compare when every agency quotes against the same list. Our guide to what a website redesign costs explains what moves the price up or down, and you can see how we present our own packages on our pricing page.

6. What Does the Process and Timeline Look Like?

A clear process usually covers discovery, design, build, testing and launch, with dates for each stage. Ask what the agency needs from you and when, because slow feedback and late content are the most common causes of delay. Most business websites take between four and twelve weeks, but your own timeline will depend on size and complexity.

7. Will I Own My Website, Domain and Content?

You should. Ask directly whether you will own the design files, the content, the domain and the hosting account, and what happens if you later move to another provider. Never agree to a setup where the agency holds your domain or locks you in.

8. What Happens After the Website Launches?

Launch is the start, not the end. Ask about support, updates, security, backups and how quickly changes are made. If you are replacing an existing site, ask how they will protect your search rankings. Google recommends permanent server-side redirects from each old page to its new equivalent, so a good agency will plan these before launch. Our website redesign service includes that planning.

9. Can I Speak to a Past Client?

A confident agency will happily connect you with a past client or share detailed case studies. You can browse our own case studies to see how we describe results, including the problem, the work and the outcome.

Web Design Agency vs Freelancer vs In-House: Which Is Right?

  • Freelancer: often a good fit for a small, clearly defined project with a limited budget. The risk is availability and having one person cover design, development and SEO.
  • Agency: usually a better fit when you need design, development, SEO and content to work together, or want continuity and support after launch.
  • In-house: makes sense when you will be changing the website daily and have enough work to keep a full-time person busy.

Red Flags When Hiring a Web Design Agency

  • A quote with no breakdown of what is included.
  • No examples of similar work, or no live links.
  • No mention of SEO, accessibility or mobile performance.
  • Pressure to sign quickly or to pay everything upfront.
  • The agency keeps ownership of your domain, hosting or content.
  • Promises of guaranteed number one rankings, which no one can honestly make.
